Climate Crisis Comments (Part 2)

Climate Change Myth 007:
“So fine 2010 may have been the warmest year on record, but the average temperature in a single year does not mean that global warming is really happening.”

Global Warming Myth busters

Climate Change Myth Busters #007

Absolutely correct, but Global Warming hasn’t just been happening in the last year, but almost any larger time frame you care to pick. As far as trends go the longer the period of the trend the more telling and powerful it is in helping to construct and see the bigger picture of what is really happening. The longer periods also incorporate the effects of shorter term repeating trends such as solar cycles, and El Nino etc., which helps eliminate them as longer term causes for observed fluctuations.

Of particular interest is the temperature increase in just the last 100 years, since that fits nicely with the start industrial revolution and has the most accurate data. For good measure one could throw in the fact that ice core samples have determined global temperatures are much warmer now than they have been at any time in the last 100,000 years.

NASA Global Land-Ocean Temperature Index

NASA’s Global Land-Ocean Temperature Index graph provides a clear view of the steep rise in global temperatures since 1880 and particularly over the past three decades.

The results for overall global temperature change of the past century are in good agreement among several alternative analyses which include: NASA/GISS, NOAA National Climate Data Center, and the joint analysis of the UK Met Office Hadley Centre and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit.
