Fuji Makes Greener Alkaline Batteries

There really are not too many products or applications that have standard battery (AAA, AA, C, and D) form factors that require only alkaline batteries that can not be replaced with rechargeable Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) or Lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries. The greener idea here is to stop throwing acid batteries into the trash that end up causing problems in landfills and the environment.

FUJI EnviroMAX300To that end Fuji has been producing an eco-friendly high performance green Alkaline batteries marketed under the brand EnviroMAX. The big question is are these Alkaline batteries from Fuji really green? Sadly the answer is not so black and white. Clearly it is a greener alternative than other Alkaline competitors, the situation is not unlike how burning natural gas is better than burning coal, however, at the end of the day your not really fixing the problem, but at least it is a step in the right direction.

Fuji EnviroMAX batteries can be disposed of in a landfill and will breakdown naturally. “No harmful elements will be released into the earth”. The new batteries contain no poisonous cadmium or mercury, no PVC and are packaged with recycled paper and PET plastic.

During production the Fuji EnviroMAX batteries are created without any Ozone-depleting compounds.

Fuji is taking Environmental Responsibility to a new level and is trying to do their part to prevent global warming, by having ISO 14001 certified Earth Friendly Manufacturing, with ZERO ozone depleting compounds being emitted from their facilities.

According to Fuji the batteries have a 7 year shelf life; one of the longest in the industry and Fuji’s green batteries meet or exceed the market leaders in performance.

However according to the guys over at Cnet.com that did some battery endurance tests using some leading Alkaline battery brands sold in the USA. Their test results using identical Mini Maglite flashlights that required two AA 1.5 volt batteries— the Fuji EnviroMAX product lasted approximately 20% less than the Duracell Ultra and 25% less than Energizer.

Other Green/environmental action plans being deployed by Fuji include:

Promoting the development of Environmentally Friendly designs, Preventing Global Warming by reducing CO2 emissions from energy consumption, reducing environmental burdens by adoption of the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and promoting Green Procurement.
