Occupy Human Rights
US Constitution gets shredded as President Obama signs H.R. 1540 the Defense Authorization bill even though he had “serious reservations with certain provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation, and prosecution of suspected terrorists”. This new law flies in the face of the US Constitution and all that it stands for about universal law and justice, which is the right to be assumed innocent unless proven guilty and the right to be argue your innocence in front of a judge or a jury of your peers.
Defense Authorization bill becomes law and shreds Constitutional laws & rights
This is now law and allows any government official to use the law as they personally wish. The law does not require that the government official needs to prove any wrong doing, only convince another official to sign a detention order that there is sufficient reason to create “suspicion”. There is no trial, no opportunity to challenge the detention, those accused don’t get to notify next of kin or contact legal representation, they can just vanish after being taken into indefinite custody.
Thank goodness government officials never become corrupt and would never use such a law against people that challenge them or perhaps hold different social or political beliefs, so everyone can rest easy. Besides Obama said “My administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens. Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a nation.”, no doubt anyone who gets into office after him will see things just the same. Not to worry things like McCarthy’s communist witch hunts and the incarceration of Japanese, German and Italian Americans during WWII never happen in the USA. Some might remember that Tea Party members were called terrorists by Pelosi, Reid and Biden, also NRA members, and various other Christian groups at times have been labeled by some using the same term.
I remember the good ol’ days when about the worse you could do to someone was call up and have a pizza to be delivered to their house when they they didn’t order order one, now you just have to accuse someone of dealing drugs or being a terrorist and one could unleash a Pandora’s box of pain upon them.
There are two bills currently in the House of Representatives that would restore due process , but ONLY for US citizens and permanent residents, HR 3676 (Republican co-authored) and HR 3702 (co-authored by Democrats), but they are still in Committee.
The Occupy Movement obviously has been correct all along with a need to restore democracy and remove corporate influence and fear mongering from politics. The people in their quest for improved human rights need to Occupy the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
