Happy Global Warming in New York Song

Inspired after attending a series of TED talks in 2006 Jill Sobule an American singer-songwriter best known for the 1995 single “I Kissed a Girl”, and “Supermodel” created and performed “Manhattan in January” to help bring attention and inspire action about Global Warming and Climate change.

Jill’s performance also served as an introduction for the next speaker at the conference, which was Al Gore. “Manhattan in January” should have been picked up by radio stations and received some airplay and not just those radio stations or TV channels with a comedy format.

For those curious about previous normal temperatures in New York–historical records from 1974 to 2012 indicate that January temperature is characterized by gradually falling daily high temperatures, with daily highs around 39°F throughout the month, exceeding 53°F or dropping below 26°F only one day in ten. During the month of January the probability that snow will be reported at least once in a given day is approximately 25%.

However, on January 6, 2007 the temperature in New York Breaks Record at 72 degrees. In nearby Newark, the high of 72 smashed the old heat record by 11 degrees which had held the record for over 55 years (being set back in 1950). More recently according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced that 2012 was the warmest year on record for the continental US.

“Manhattan in January” Lyrics by Jill Sobule

Strolling along in Central Park
Everyone’s out today
The daisies and dogwoods are all in bloom
Oh, what a glorious day
For picnics and Frisbees and rollerskaters
Friends and lovers and lonely sunbathers

Everyone’s out in merry
Manhattan in January

I brought the iced tea
Did you bring the bug spray?
The flies are the size of my head
And next to the palm tree, did you see the gator
Looks happy and very well-fed?

Everyone’s out in merry
Manhattan in January

My preacher said, “Now don’t you worry
The scientists have it all wrong”
And so, who cares?
It’s winter here
And I have my halter top on

The surfers on Park Avenue
Avoid the old street signs
They’re glad that they’ve avoided the plague
And how the sun does shine

Everyone’s out in merry
Manhattan in January
