Socialism has been a big part of USA culture for a very long time, which makes the United States a mixed economy that features elements of both Capitalism and Socialism.
Some media sources do what is called “red-baiting” where they blur, blend or equate Socialism with Communism or even Fascism—Don’t fall prey to their fear mongering propaganda or pseudo scarewords.
The USA would be lucky to have another Socialist President, Senate and Congress. For example some previous Presidents of the USA that can and often were also called “Socialists”:
Abraham Lincoln (1st income tax, railroads, helped established colleges & abolished slavery)
Dwight D. Eisenhower (GI Bill)
Franklin D. Roosevelt (New Deal, equal access to education and Interstate highways)
Ronald Reagan (increased national debt for the public good from 32% to 53% of GDP)
John F. Kennedy (was against exploitation of workers by Capitalism & Communism)
Harry Truman (new public works programs and increased social welfare)
Lyndon B. Johnson (Great Society programs)
Richard Nixon (EPA, OSHA)
Teddy Roosevelt (National Parks)
The term “Social Democrat” is not a radical, controversial or fearful label in the least.
